I certainly prefer the French versions to the English ones she did. As in any translation the exact feeling is often lost for lack of a proper substitute. One wonders if she truly did regret nothing...
Janice, quite. A kingdom for a congenial translation. It's the same with this blog. How often would I have to make a compromise in order to minimize the risk of making mistakes; to chose words / constructions that (sometimes) come close to what I am intending to write, but ...
As for your wondering: If she had wished to be honest she had sung 'I regret this and that, but ...', like f.e. Sinatra did.
The text might, however, not have been compatible to the melody. :)
